Description
Lie-Nielsen collaborated with Kentucky master chairmaker, Brian Boggs, and the results are physically beautiful tools with outstanding performance. The 1/8″ thick, 2″ wide A2 steel blade has a lovely (and comfortable) radiused back edge. The blade’s thickness and the fact that it is held in place between a fully-machined bed and a flat cap iron (rather than pivoting bars) make it much less prone to chatter or tearout than other shaves we’ve used. The bronze body and hickory handles are beautifully executed, and the oversized knurled thumbscrews make setup less of a trial.
Flat Bottom Spokeshave
The Flat Bottom Spokeshave is used for shaping flat or convex surfaces. It is 10-1/2″ long with a 1″ flat sole. Weighs 12 ounces.
Curved Bottom Spokeshave
The Curved Bottom Spokeshave has a very slight curve (approximately 5″ radius) curve from front to back on the sole. It is used for shaping inside curves. The 5″ radius curve will work well for shaping inside curves up to 10″. If you need to work a tigher radius, you can modify the sole. You might also consider the Lie-Nielsen Small Bronze Spokeshave for small radius work. (It has a 1-1/2″ radius.) The Curved Bottom Spokeshave is 10-1/2″ long and weighs 12 ounces.
If you are concerned that you received a flat spokeshave instead of the curved spokeshave you ordered, please check the sole front-to-back with a straight edge.
